Digital is Transforming the Workplace
Is it time to rewire your learning?
It's sobering to look at photos of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in his Harvard dorm room working on the embryonic social network in 2004.
So much has changed in such a short space of time. I mean look at this early interface:

So let's fast forward a few years to 2007 when the iPhone was introduced. Once powered by smart, handheld devices, the digital revolution really began to reshape our world.
Inefficiencies are being eliminated, thanks to the cloud.
Want to organise a school reunion? Why not simply use your phone to check up on your old friends? Queuing for a cab in the rain? Just grab an Uber instead. Item out of stock at the mall? Order with one-click on Amazon - they’ll deliver next day, even at the weekend.
And just think, we now have digital natives (a generation that grew up with this kind of technology) not just entering the workplace, but assuming management and leadership responsibility. So, as learning practitioners, we can’t bury our heads any longer. This digital revolution is not confined to our social lives and leisure time - it’s changing the way we work.
So we need to get more comfortable with the link between learning and digital. Once we've done that, we can utilise the successful manoeuvres of social networking and other cloud-based services to leverage this cultural trend.
Think about collaboration.
Once collaboration meant teamwork - pulling together through a series of communal challenges to complete a task. Now collaboration usually means collaborative tools. And, like it or loathe it, the lines between work and recreation have become blurred because we use our smartphones for both.
But, before we get ahead of ourselves, let us consider how digital is actually underpinned by something extremely old-fashioned - trust. When using eBay or Uber you might have some of the following concerns: “Will this person pay me?” “Will my item be delivered on time?” “Will my cab be clean?” “Will the driver be reliable and courteous?”
So what do you do? You check out profiles and ratings. There is a digital community of people who willingly contribute their opinions and record their experiences for the benefit of everyone else.
This is something we need to replicate with digital learning. We want our learners to ask themselves, "Was the content useful?" "Would I recommend it to others?" This feedback is invaluable when giving new learners trust in the content and encouraging other users to engage with learning materials.
You rate, you interact and you trust.
With solid, social foundations we can then tackle the most glaring inefficiencies by removing elements of learning that can be done better digitally. For instance, that whole day out of the office for a training programme can be turned into a half-day session with digital bolt-ons.
Digital has the power to transform learning metrics. It’s like a live traffic report - a continuous trajectory of the impact your learning is having - which is a lot more interesting and insightful than the take-up rates and test scores captured by your LMS. Digital information is easier to track, recording a huge variety of interesting touch points such as drop-out rates.
